 New Deal Numerology: Ballot Count
by Deputy Editor Tim Price

This week’s numbers: 61; 66; 60; 53; 58

61%... is a united number. That’s how many Ohioans voted to repeal the state’s law banning collective bargaining by public workers. GOP Gov. John Kasich maintains that this just proves his point about the dangers of letting people make decisions together.
66%... is an optional number. That’s how many Ohioans voted in favor of a constitutional amendment to ban mandatory insurance programs. The last thing they want is to be lumped into one large group that can negotiate a better deal for… wait a minute.
60%... is a latecomer’s number. That’s how many voters overturned a Maine law banning same-day voter registration. Supporters of the law made a last-minute push for support, but they couldn’t overcome the forces of dramatic irony.
53%... is a rescinded number. That’s how many Arizonans voted to recall State Senate President Russell Pearce, leader of the state’s anti-immigrant crackdown. He could have eked out a victory if only the voting instructions weren’t written in Spanish. Or English.
58%
... is an existential number. That’s how many Mississippi voters rejected the state’s proposed Personhood amendment. They chose to preserve the traditional definition of personhood, which begins at the moment of a corporation’s first public offering.
